Recruitment Trends: Industry Insights 2020

As we stride into 2020 we look back on what 2019 meant for the recruitment industry and the UK employment market as a whole. In WaveTrackR’s much-anticipated Annual Report, forged from data taken from its in-built, real-time analytics, we investigate what did and didn’t work for recruiters and look ahead to what might be in store over the year to come.

We have analysed recruitment data from our multi-posting job distribution software and compiled it into an easy-to-read report that uncovers industry trends and factors influencing jobs posted and applications received from candidates. What will you uncover?

Candidates most actively search for jobs in the first quarter of the year.
The preferred average length for job adverts is 200-300 words.
Candidates most often apply for jobs at the beginning of the week.
Flexible working terms made it into our list of top 60 keywords entered by candidates when searching for jobs.
Job boards still account for the vast majority of posted jobs at 83%.
The IT & Internet sector posted the highest number of jobs and Transport & Logistics received the greatest volume of applications.

The year that was…

With employment at the joint-highest rate since records began and unemployment scraping just 3.8%, 2019 was a great year for jobseekers. Recruiters, on the other hand, faced another year of Brexit-related uncertainty, with employer hiring confidence dipping to -0.8%.

32.75 million people were employed in 2019, a rise of 323,000 on 2018, whilst just 1.31 million people of employable age were unemployed, 72,000 less than the previous year. On a positive note for recruiters, there was a 46% year-on-year increase in recruitment company registrations and the UK recruitment industry grew to reach a worth of nearly £40 billion.

In our report we compiled data from 14 industries to unearth which job boards are the most popular for job posting and applications and which platform performs better within specific industries. We also looked at which day of the week was best to post jobs and our results show a discordance between the day most recruiters tend to post jobs and the day that the majority of candidates apply.

Tip: wait until the beginning of the week to post your job adverts to catch candidates when they’re most active.
